I believe the updraft carburetor configuration is used mainly on in-line engines because the use of a downdraft carburetor whould cause the the installation height of the powerplant to be to large in the vertical direction thus requiring raising of the driver"s seat to be able to see over the hood( or bonnet for you folks across the pond.). You can either put a fuel filter in the fuel line or put one of those glass bowl filters under the tank. You will be surprised how far it can be off.
